Today’s Henry Ford’s birthday.

Had he lived, he’d be 153 .

Noted for not inventing the production line and a liking for fascism and anti-Semitism.

If ever there was a case of history not being a cut and dried thing it would be him. The same guy who famously paid his workers a living wage so that they could buy his product also had goons bash in workers’ heads for having the audacity to think that maybe they should have a union represent them.

Henry Ford: sympathized with Nazis, then helped kill hundreds of thousands of Nazis. Life comes at you fast.

Also supplied both sides, because business. The US taxpayer paid compo for the factory in Cologne which they bombed.

Most of the people killed by those bombers were civilians.

Jews in my family were GM adherents for years because Fords were acknowledging the enemy. An Orthodox Jew uncle later bought a Town Car - did not know if he knew (that side of the family wasn’t the brightest). I bought an SHO in 1997 (new) and a 300D in 1987. But I wasn’t born until long after WWII ended.

But if I’d been alive during the war would I have gone Ford shopping in 1948, when he was just now dead? My great aunt had a number on her arm. She was nominally in Russia, and I remember when she said: “From Poland they came to get us!”

about that... the biggest reason was so to slow the crazy turnover rates, and workers only qua lified if they worked a whole year.

And yet the German subsidiarly of GM fully cooperated with the Nazi regime. So much so that during the war they still paid royalties for GM patents used in the Opel Blitz; if I remember correctly, it was not very different from a certain Bedford lorry.

I had never heard about reparations to damages to the Cologne plant, that’s fascinating. It’s been said too that towards the very end of the war certain production sites linked to US interests (such as Ford or GM) were less bombed than others.

As I mentioned to Mr Boredalways, even during WW2 GM was being paid royalties for the patents used in the Opel Blitz.

In his memories Ferry Porsche mentioned visiting Henry Ford before the war, while he was studying production methods and factory layouts for what was going to be Wolfsburg. I cannot p o s s i b l y remember the exact date of their meeting, but Porsche was shocked when Ford stated in no uncertain terms that there was going to be another great war.

There’s been a lot of controversy about the bombing or not of various US plants in Germany . I found a lengthy article here which suggests that while Ford-Werke suffered little damage during the war, this was because attempts to bomb the Cologne factory were unsuccessful.
